Advanced Open Studio

Advanced Open Studio is for artists who have completed group painting or drawing classes with Sadie, and wish to practice their skills in an ideal environment for classical study.
With Sadie’s help and instruction, artists will paint or draw from still lifes or plaster casts.
1 day per week, 10am-4pm
Includes 30 minute consultation with instructor per session
PRE-REQUISITE
Students must take Drawing Fundamentals or Figure Drawing before taking this class. Students who wish to paint in AOS, must complete the Oil Painting group class first, or the 10-Day Workshop. (Sorry, there are no exceptions, regardless of the experience level of the student.)
The following advanced oil techniques and principles are presented in Advanced Open Studio:
Composition and Drawing
Essential theories for composing a successful picture, starting with thumbnail sketches and then developing a detailed drawing to be transferred to the painting panel. Additional drawing exercises done in class and at home build on the concepts covered in Drawing Fundamentals.
Value and Color
Controlling Hue, Value, and Chroma to accurately depict realistic color. Understand how transparent and opaque paints affect color mixing. Builds on the basic color theory introduced in Oil I.
Layering and Glazing
Using thin layers of transparent and opaque paint for the most believable realism and a refined finish.
Transparency and Reflection
Techniques for depicting transparent and reflective objects.
Drapery and Crumpled Paper
How to use the Principles of Organic Form taught in the Drawing classes to analyze the structure of crumpled and draped materials.
Materials
In-depth review of materials: paint, supports, brushes, solvents, mediums, varnish
Enrolled artists can reserve their place for as many consecutive sessions as they want, and may do a series of projects if they wish.
Registration is by rolling admission: As space opens up, we select the next person on the waiting list to take their place.
